Storyline ‘Application Failed to Start’ Error? Try this.

Recently we’ve had lots of customers writing in about issues with opening our Storyline files.

The problem has to do with file the extension “.storytemplate” and unknown settings in Windows, rendering Windows unable to identify what type of file our template is, therefore not knowing how to open it.

Here is the error people will get when Windows doesn’t know what to do with the file:

“The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more details.”

Storyline will default to save files as .story files, we save our templates as .storytemplate files. The benefit of having .storytemplate files is that once they are imported into Storyline, they will be saved in your Storyline Templates library, as illustrated below.
