In the eLearning world, it seems that live-action video is the rarest of gems. There is a place for it though (see this live-action blog), and so you need to learn some camera techniques.
Coming from a live-action video background, I am sort of a snob when it comes to cameras. I prefer cameras that offer me, the user, full control. This means the ability to adjust aperture, shutter angle, ISO, and white balance. Many cameras have an auto white balance feature, and that is great—unless you are moving in one shot from one area to another, and the two areas are lit differently.
In the video below, I’ll show how I did testing on my camera to know what white balance to select for two different rooms.
Not everyone is going to need to be concerned with white balancing. If your live-action eLearning video takes place in one lighting situation, automatic balancing probably works fine. Some cameras will offer you to select the type of light you’re shooting in and then offer a generalized preset. For example: tungsten lights, fluorescent lights, cloudy sunlight, etc.
