As the summer temperatures rise it’s important to stay hydrated. Globe University-Woodbury Exercise Science Program Chair, Reid Perry, shares the importance of staying hydrated and some tips on how to maintain hydration, especially on hot summer days.
The body survives on water. Keeping the body hydrated helps the heart more easily pump blood through the blood vessels to the muscles. And, it helps the muscles work efficiently.
“If you’re well hydrated, your heart doesn’t have to work as hard,” said John Batson, M.D, a sports medicine physician with Lowcountry Spine & Sport in Hilton Head Island, S.C., and an American Heart Association volunteer.
Tips to Stay Hydrated:
Drink water throughout the day (add fruit and herbs to your water to give it some extra flavor. Also, carry a water bottle with you throughout your day and keep filling it up when you get the chance.) Eat foods that contain water (watermelon, cucumbers, pineapple, tomatoes, strawberries) Try to avoid alcohol and sugary beverages Add beverages with electrolytes Be sure to start every exercise well-hydrated
