Compliance, in a general sense of the word, means conforming to certain laws, polices, standards or specifications. Regulatory compliance refers to the goals that organizations aim to achieve in their efforts to ensure that they are aware and well-equipped to meet the relevant laws, regulations, policies and protocols of the countries with which they are conducting their business activities. It is important to note that accreditation of organizations vary according to the industry they serve, for example, HACCP for the food and beverage industry, PCI-DSS and GLBA in the financial industry, Joint Commission and HIPAA in healthcare, and FISMA for the U.S. federal agencies.
