A Little Rant and a Concession

I love my job, I really do. But, a consistent frustration of mine is the mandate to “train people on technology.” I saw a post from 2013 by Tina Barseghian on Mind/Shift today that challenged me.

Technology is a tool, not a learning outcome.

This statement, at first, seemed a beaming reinforcement of my consistent irritation at not being given desired outcomes of technology training. I’m always asking for the why… or, maybe I just talk about asking for the why. I began to think about how persistent I have really been about this issue. And, it seems I haven’t been persistent enough.

What I have done is try to imagine what I think the learning outcome should be. But, that’s dangerous territory. While I feel like I have a good sense how many of the departments on campus operate, I’m not certain. And there are a few I have no clue about. Something’s gotta give, but it isn’t going to move unless I start pushing a little harder.
