All about Written Ability Test (WAT) – Expert insights

Almost all the IIMs have replaced Group Discussion (GD) with the Written Ability Test (WAT) in the selection process and rightly so. In the earlier days of IIMs, a group discussion would have been the right process to evaluate a lot of skills. However, increasing competition and the limited time available means most of the Group discussions only measure who can shout the loudest.

What is this Written Ability Test (WAT)?

It is a pen and paper test conducted by IIMs as a part of their second round process after CAT. The candidate is asked to write a short essay on either a current affairs topic or on any other issue where people usually have diverse points of view. The time limit given for writing these essays range from as short as 10 minutes (IIMA) to as long as 30 minutes (IIMB).
