BBC iPlayer – goes to 11

I expect you know this, but the volume on the BBC iPlayer goes up to 11.

This comes from a scene in the 1984 mockumentary/rockumentary This Is Spinal Tap. Spinal Tap’s Nigel Tufnel explains how his band’s amplifiers go to eleven – one more.

This kind of visual humour really works for me, and one reason is that it you don’t get it, it doesn’t matter. The worst jokes are those that need explanation or leave you wondering why something was said – or I suppose just aren’t funny.

A lot of people say that learning should be fun. I’m not sure how practical – in the long term – this is. What I think is important is that you get something out of your learning experience, that you go away feeling like you’ve actually gained something. And that’s what I think is missing from a lot of elearning today, and people are talking with their fingers. “Users often leave Web pages in 10-20 seconds, but pages with a clear value proposition can hold people’s attention for much longer”. And I suspect similar figures would apply to elearning.
