Andregogy is the study of how adults learn and the development of methodologies for effectively teaching adults. Malcolm Knowles (the godfather of Andregogly) provided a framework to understand the differences between pedagogy(the study of children learning) and andragogy. These principles are based on the most common traits that have been observed in adult learners. These traits include:
The adult learner have a “need to know” why information is important. As we all know life is busy. As adults, we are busy in the process of life. So adults need to know how this learning will benefit them and why is it worth their time and effort.
The adult learner have developed self-concepts, and do not like to be talked down too. We are self-directed, not dependent and like to be treated that way when learning. We can not be forced to learn in a particular way, but adult learning can be facilitated by guiding them to the right resources and by using the right methodology.
