Do Learning Management Systems Manage Student Learning?

Over the past 10 to 20 years there has been an emergence of databases, websites and general digital tools labelled as Learning Management Systems (LMS). This terminology concerns me because I believe that no system is able to manage learning; learning management needs to be a collaborative process between the student, the teacher and other collaborative partners; and is overseen, or managed by the teacher (not a system).

It is the ability to manage the learning needs of students that defines a “good” teacher; or as stated by Hattie:
