For Teachers: Best Political Satirists to Watch in Your Classroom

It’s been a tough year for the satirical news business. First, we lost Stephen Colbert to retirement in December, and then just a few weeks ago, Jon Stewart announced that he too would be retiring from The Daily Show. Although Stewart didn’t invent the political satirist, he did a damn good job at it. For me (and for a lot of people over 30), Stewart came on the scene right when I was beginning to understand politics and the media and The Daily Show was my guide. Stewart would say he was running a comedy show, so how is it that his audience was one of the most informed audiences in cable television? Even compared to traditional news outlets like FOX, MSNBC, and CNN.

There’s a lot we can from political satirists today and even more that our students can learn from Stewart, Colbert, and Oliver. Below are some of the best videos from the satirical legends that you can play for your classroom:
