Free Tools for June: Alternatives to Common E-learning Applications

This month’s free ‘download’ is not so much an actual document, but links to some free applications that I use during the training development life-cycle. This is a two-part post.

1. Content Collection: When you’re gathering information, all you want is a clean page where you can document and format it. MS Word, or the free OpenOffice Writer and Google Docs are useful tools for this purpose. For taking notes on the go, Evernote is a good tool, though the free version is not as useful as even the basic paid version. SimpleNote is a free alternative and can be downloaded for iOS, Android, Mac, and Kindle platforms. For Windows, Microsoft OneNote is a good option.

2. Storyboarding: For normal storyboarding purposes, I usually like to use MS PowerPoint. I prefer using PowerPoint over MS Word because I can replicate the visual course interface more closely in pptx/ ppt format. If I need to use, or recommend, a free version, I point towards OpenOffice Impress or Google Slides.
