I'm sure you're no stranger to the word. If anything, you've probably become more familiar with the term over the last few years given the state of employment, and the skills shortage in the United States. 

If you want to get technical, the official definition of training, according to the Association for Talent Development (formerly American Society for Training + Development), means:

"A process that aims to improve knowledge, skills, attitudes, and/or behaviors in a person to accomplish a specific job task or goal. Training is often focused on business needs and driven by time-critical business skills and knowledge, and its goal is often to improve performance."
