Great Reads: Books that Make You Think

The following are a few books I have read (and reread) that I have applied to teaching, professional development, and activities for my students. If you are looking for some professional development reads, consider sitting down with one (or all) of these books and thinking about how you too, can apply it to your profession.

The Culture of Fear: Why Americans are Afraid of the Wrong Things by Barry Glassner discusses how we, as Americans, are taught to be afraid of things that pose little, if any, risk to us. As teachers, so much is tossed in our face by the media and politicians that it brings to light the power of fear mongering in education. I ask you to consider: what is the culture of fear for teachers in education? Is it SGO’s, parents, or evaluations? What about for students? Is it grades, parents (again), college, or friends? An interesting read to say the least.
