GU Criminal Justice Program Chair Shares Thoughts on Docuseries, ‘Making a Murderer’

It is the documentary that everyone is talking about. It is hard to go online these days and not find a post, story, opinion, comment or theory on the 10-part Netflix documentary series, ‘Making a Murderer’. The program documents the real-life story of Steven Avery, a Wisconsin man who spent 18 years in prison for a rape that evidence later showed he did not commit. Shortly after being exonerated he was convicted and sentenced to life in prison for the 2005 murder of Auto Trader photographer Teresa Halbach. Avery also maintains his innocence in that case.

The series takes an in-depth look at how his case was handled by law enforcement and the legal system in Manitowoc County. It has left a lot of people asking a lot of questions about this case and our legal system.
