The process of online learning is very dependent on each individual student and is driven by them. Unlike other forms of learning, they are not forced to learn but have come here because of their own interest. They might have got the motivation to start but in order to acquire the new skill they want, there needs to be constant motivation to give them that push.
Online learners, in general, are doing two things at once by taking up a course. The first thing is obviously the effort to learn a new topic. The second is that they are their own master i.e. they have to manage their own learning (also called self-directed learning). At the end of the day, the main goal of the student is to gain enough understanding of the topic that does justice to their abilities. In order to accomplish that, instructors need to make sure that they focus more on the learning part and less on the managing part.
