How Students’ Use of G Suite for Education Can Be a Real Eye-Opener

There’s no denying the value of teaching lessons on digital citizenship. In fact, teaching soft skills, such as digital citizenship, empathy, communication and self-awareness is discussed in a recent Gaggle Speaks blog post.

But an increasing number of school districts, like Wayne Township Public Schools in New Jersey, understand the value of both teaching digital citizenship and implementing technology that helps create teachable moments for students who might take a misstep.

Our friends at Common Sense Education open every Symposium on Student Safety with a keynote called, “Driving Towards Responsible Digital Citizenship & Keeping Our Students Safe.”

The analogy they came up with—and that we love—compares online student safety to driver’s education: The best driving lessons (digital citizenship) won’t save a student’s life without a seatbelt (technology like Gaggle Safety Management). Conversely, the best safety features in a car don’t guarantee an accident-free trip without someone behind the wheel who understands the dangers of speeding or is aware of blind spots.
