The remote world might seem like a blessing in disguise for most workers, but it comes at a cost. According to the Office for National Statistics based in the UK, remote workers do almost double the overtime compared to their in-office colleagues, but were less than half as likely to be promoted over a 5-year period. They were also less likely to have received a bonus, and less likely to receive training opportunities.
That’s a serious problem.
Remote workers are already at a disadvantage given the lack of direct visibility they receive from their supervisors and managers. Not being in the office means missing out on impromptu watercooler conversations, pre-meeting banter, and in-person luncheons – key opportunities to network and socialize that can lead to future promotions and sponsorships.
