Overdoing Video Transitions

Admittedly, I’m a big Simpsons fan.  Not as much lately but the older episodes are too funny.  One of my favorite sequences from The Simpsons is an episode when Homer and Lisa are producing a movie.  At one point, Homer is checking in on Lisa who is editing their movie.  Here is their conversation:

Lisa: OK, I finished editing the gardening sequence. . .
Homer: OK, from here we star wipe to a glamor shot of Flanders paying his bills, then we star wipe to Flanders brushing his teeth. . .
Lisa: Dad, there are other wipes besides star wipes. . .
Homer: Why eat hamburger when you can have steak?
Lisa: I’m taking my name off this thing.

So, are you Homer or are you Lisa?  Do you scroll through all of the gaudy transition effects that come with your editing software and see how many you can squeeze into each production?  Or, do you have one or two go-to transitions that you use every time?
