The Connection Between Goals and Feedback

In a few of our earlier posts we have talked about how to give feedback, and why feedback is important. We’ve also talked about why goals are important and how to set SMART goals.

Today I want to talk about how the two things fit together.

Goals help you see the finish line. They help you know what you’re working for and they keep you focused on the right things. But without feedback along the way, two things can happen that make it harder for you to achieve your goal:

Working Harder Not Smarter

– Sometimes when you are so focused on getting to the end, you don’t pace yourself. You work hard and if you don’t see progress right away, you might give up. This is where feedback can help. Getting feedback can show you where you are making progress (even though you might not be able to see it) or help you find new ideas and new things to try that help you move forward. The right feedback at the right time will help you stay on track.
