What is iris and how do I set it correctly?

The iris is an adjustable opening on your camera’s lens that determines how much light will enter the lens. By opening the iris, you allow more light to enter which results in a brighter shot. Conversely, closing the iris will limit the light entering the lens and result in a darker shot.

Many consumer camcorders have an auto iris built in with no manual controls available. For these cameras, you must ensure that you are always taping in a nice, evenly lit environment.

However, if you do have a camera with a manual iris (usually a ring on the lens), there are some simple tricks to ensuring a nice-looking shot.
