What Reserve & National Guard Spouses Need to Know

 

Weekend Warriors is a term I often hear in regards to my husband’s service in the Army Reserves.  In the beginning, this term was confusing to me as I knew it was meant as a low blow.  He served several years on active duty before switching to the reserves; he has a total of 18 years of service now.  Over the past 8 years my weekend warrior has been deployed twice for a total 29 months, which does not count the several courses he has completed that are a month or longer, the classes he has led, or the time away from home that his civilian job has required.

The thing about our National Guard and our Reserve families is that, in addition to their military service, required trainings, and military responsibilities, they also have full time civilian jobs.  For us, his civilian job was working nights and traveling regularly, so often times he would work every day for 2 weeks or more between the two.  Additionally, he missed much of our daughter’s early years.
