What the International Space Station (ISS) can tell us about success and failure

Life on earth is often puzzling. We emerge from this planet as rational beings – capable of emotion, morality and empathy. However, even after years of developing the most logical path through life, equipped with a foolproof formula to help deal with our emotions, our primal instincts almost always get the better of us. We are possessive, competitive and conniving creatures. We have the capacity to be moral, but have an unrelenting desire to better ourselves at the expense of others.

We exploit each other to achieve more individually and we exploit our environment in order to secure the means to our happiness. Did we really think life in space would be any different?

In response to recent economic sanctions imposed on Russian government officials by the United States, Russia plans to leave the ISS by 2020.
