Wikipedia – ban it or embrace it?

Is Wikipedia the bane of the academic’s life? Do your students look everything up on Wikipedia, and never use any other resources? Do you cringe when you see Wikipedia on your student’s list of references?

Perhaps we should be taking a different approach…

Neil Selwyn, Professor in the Faculty of Education at Monash University, says “Lecturers should be encouraging their classes to edit and improve Wikipedia pages. At the very least, more academics should become Wikipedia editors – writing on their areas of expertise.” (see “Wikipedia use – nothing to be ashamed about”)
